Interview with Heidi Stibæek Kaiser
Where are you from and where is your Art practice based currently?
I am from Denmark. I reside and work in Copenhagen.
Do you have a formal Art Education or are you Self Taught?
I studied Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art and Painting at the Spektrum School of Art.
Where do you look for inspiration? What themes do you find more interesting?
It can be anything, colors I see, music, art, nature. I am very much into the material itself - structures, flow, the mix of colors. It is a visual language without words.
Have any Women Abstract Artists influenced your work? Which current Artists do you admire?
Sure, it is hard to choose, but here are a few: Martha Jungwirth, Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, and Joan Mitchell. Rose Wylie, Daisy Parris, Terry Ekasala, Katherine Bradford and Katharina Grosse.
Do you identify most with a specific Art Abstract genre?
I tend to fall in love with abstract works which include gestures and colors.
Can you tell us about your process?
The creation of my work is a blend of spontaneity and experience. Painting a canvas, to me, is both an improvised physical act and an awareness of all the elements.
I build color, gesture and composition in many layers - sometimes according to a simple procedural rule set, other times the strategies are more complicated based on a mood or a certain inner energy.
The paintings often consist of hidden or obvious structures, borne of both spontaneity and experience. The color is a fundamental element, just like the gesture and the pace of the individual stroke. There are no restrictions on the choice of materials. Patches of canvas are included equally with oil/acrylic paint, varnish, spray paint, oil chalk or graphite - everything is allowed.

How has being a Woman affected your Art career? Any challenges?
The statistics show it, women are less seen, less represented, and less sold. That is a challenge.
What advice would you give to other Abstract Women Artists entering the Art World?
The thing I always remind myself is: each Artist’s journey is different.
